08/01/2007 - Vauxhall unleashes its hottest ever supermini - the New Corsa VXR
Set to debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March and available to UK drivers shortly after, this long awaited addition to the VXR performance brand builds on the excitement generated by the New Corsa line up - but takes it in an altogether more powerful direction.
Distinctive Looks
Immediately set apart from other models in the range by its triangular aspect door mirrors, front fog light surrounds and central exhaust tailpipe, New Corsa VXR boasts aggressively styled front and rear bumpers that are unique to the model. Sweeping side skirts and a rakishly angled roof spoiler accentuate the three-door model's already purposeful design, while a mesh front grille, blue-painted brake calipers and optional (at extra cost) 18-inch alloy wheels add to the muscular, performance look.
Inside, sculptured, shell-backed Recaro sports seats continue the sporty theme, matched with a race-car style flat-bottomed steering wheel, drilled alloy pedals, piano black facia trim and unique VXR detailing on the dials and gear lever.
Stunning performance
Equiped with a lightweight, compact 1.6 litre turbocharged petrol engine, the 192PS machine can accelerate from 0-60 in just 6.8 seconds before powering on to a top speed of 140mph. The new model features an 'overboost' facility which can hike the amount of torque available to a maximum in excess of 260Nm - more than enough to assist safe overtaking.
Helping to keep all that power and torque securely on the road, the new model features a dynamically optimised chassis employing a specially tuned Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) system, along with uprated brakes / suspension and variable rate assisted power steering. The latter set-up adjusts its weight and feel according to the way the car is driven. Yet despite its uncompromising performance and leading-edge technology, New Corsa VXR is surprisingly affordable to run, with fuel economy figures averaging 35.8mpg over the combined cycle. (Figures quoted are those obtained under official Goverment EC Economy Tests, and actual economy and emissions obtained by drivers will vary according to speed, road, driving style, tyre pressures, load, and other factors)
